thats great gas milage.

my 94 averages about 20 mpg with no mods but then again I dont leave it running more than needed with gas at 3.33 a gallon who can afford to

On the open road I get....

21.5 to 22, got as high as 23.1 once. In town I get around 17.5 to 17.8. I drive conservatively. The mods I have done is the K/N air filter, 2.5 in. exhaust with a high flow cat and muff. I did the Swiss cheese thing to the air box. I would like to do the electric fan but can't justify the cost after the exhaust system mod.

did the swiss cheese thing to the air box help?

I was told that i should only get 12 - 15 mpg as stock motor. so i thought it was pretty cool that i added 3 so far, i havent ran it to Empty yet, its still at a quarter to go, so ill know exact mpg when its done with.

Not sure by reading if you have actually filled up to get a hard consumption number, and Ford gauges are notorious for dropping the last 1/2 of the needle like Britney drops trou. If you're guessing by the gauge only, you're not getting anywhere near an accurate reading. I put in 6.3 gallons today before gas went up, and I was still sitting with the needle touching "F"

The other thing is, it's hard to get a super accurate number since you may not always fill the same way. I try to fill on the low setting, and after it clicks off, squeeze the pump handle for 2 more clicks, then stop, no matter how close it is to the next whole dollar. :)

I'll be watching your thread in interest, but need to see the gallons pumped vs. miles driven number if this isn't it, and 12 for a stock motor is a little low...

What half of your kit is installed?

what kit are you talking about?

the hho kit, since ive bought the explorer 2.5 yrs ago ive only gotten 15 miles per gallon on it. We would get 220-225 miles per tank, that is topped off full to truck dieing on empty.

is there a better motor ?

Man, I get around 14mpg in town, 17 highway. I'd love to get over 20mpg. Maybe I'll buy a kit.
What's this about swiss-cheesing the air box? Never heard of it. I drive mine in the winter, so will this kill the driveability in snow?

Well im still sitting on the first "test tank" of the kit, and when i used to only get 225 per tank (toped off full to ran dead empty)! I am now sitting at 19 mpg (291 miles on tank), and still running with same gas (topped of full, trying to run dead), hasn't died on me yet and ive done a lot of sitting at kids bus stop waiting on their bus and driving wife around and kids around, so yeah like the news says "ill report, you decide".

most i've gotten with my stock motor is 17.44MPG (city, not out on highway much), no modifications. synthetic oil and driveline though.

i've now got a dynomax super turbo high flow muffler, and its not quite the same. i enjoy the sound too much. next week i'm getting a kkm intake for it. then i'll try to drive it easy and get a new mpg rating.

I get 16 doing regular in-town driving, lots of short trips and stopping, on long trip ~300mi out to PA, including climbing some of those big hills, a/c on for around half the time, I got 20 mpg. I think I could do better (21-22) if I didn't have to go up those hills. Stock airbox with Fram tough-gaurd air filter (supposed to flow better than a regular one, its like oiled paper). Stock exhaust, Motorcraft plugs and wires, Mobil 1 synthetic Truck/SUV blend oil.
I'm gonna clean the MAF soon, see what that does. I think that a lot of people are adding intakes and exhausts and other dodads without checking the basics like plugs and wires. A good tune-up can make a big difference in mileage.

I have to agree. I had an Airraid Cone filter, and one of those high dollar "Tuned" intakes on my '91. The intake tube was thin sheet metal. My gas mileage sucked BIG time 12-14 MPG Highway, 10-12 Town.
I took that junk off last Friday and put the stock filter box Fram Filter and stock intake tube back on. I filled it up and took a 200 mile highway trip and some in town driving. A total of 250 miles on 15 gallons for a 16.6mpg average.

This is the best this truck has done. I have a new engine, new plugs and wires. I think if I took off my 31X10.50's I could get another 1-2 mpg. That tells me 99.9999999% of these so called "Gas Saving" devices are 100% pure bullshit. My truck gets 3mpg better STOCK with a good tuneup.

you got to remember though, that most PURE BULL **** is actually where everything starts, man i spent 300+ dumbly to do mine. and it worked, yeah i was pissed when i found out it cost roughly 50 to make it, but hey pure bullshit? Microsoft started as bull ****, a jacked up truck started as a dumb bull **** idea, both of those took off like rockets, the idea of having a movie on a disc was even bull **** and now dvds rule the movie world. some of the best ideas started off as bullshit!

I agree. Many people are quick to call the stock intakes on just about any vehicle garbage and replace them with some aftermarket product. I'm not going to go and say that the stock intake cannot be improved, but many of those improvements come at a price to driveabilty or performance in different temperatures. A new intake may improve airflow, but what good is it sucking hot, underhood air while you're stuck in traffic? And more airflow is great, but how often are you running at wide open throttle where it makes a difference? It's great if you're racing, not so much when you're stuck in traffic driving for groceries.

You have to consider that many hours of design and testing went into the factory intake to make for good driveability, reliability and performance in any and all conditions, and that the part you replace it with has probably been designed to fit in the space and LOOK better than the original, without any testing for actual performance.

The debate about gas saving (and performance improving) devices will go on an on and on. People will get angry and yell 'till they're red in the face, yet still nobody will be able to come to a conclusion. There are too many variables, like driving conditions, the condition of the rest of the vehicle, how it is used, etc. that factor in to fuel economy to make one person's results comparable to another's results. Just go with whatever works best for you...
