I would say its a vacuum leak although that wouldn't explain the fuel smell. It's up to you wether or not you wanna keep dealing with this guy, I can't stand that it takes the tire shop 30 minutes to rotate my tires. But then again, I don't let other people work on my truck other than the free balance and rotation

A month? I'd go see the mechanic... Sometimes they take advantage of a patient customer to a fault. I mean the good-fast-cheap / pick two rule applies, but a month?

I'd go try to prod him a little, because that seems way excessive to me. If he's a classic car guy, that's cool, but they tend to take months to fix stuff since it's just hobby repair. Yours is a little different, he probably needs to be reminded of that... :)

I know that some shops - if they cant figure it out kinda quick - they will put the vehicle aside and forget about it. Circuit City did this with a van - probably part of the reason they had to close - because they could not figure out the audio system. Every morning we backed it outside. I would do a drive by every day and see if you can see it sitting somewhere.

Have him check the capacitors on the ECM. They will go bad and cause the fuel pump to run continuously, or not at all. They can be replaced for little Money, and a little time.

Also, the injector harness can develop shorted circuits where it goes under the battery tray area. This might very well be an issue which is tough to find. If they are giving you a good price on the labor it might be a thing they have to walk away from every once in a while.

I almost bet $$ if you could find the correct ECM and wire harness for this truck you could fix it yourself.
