Hey guys.

Well the other day I began to install a radio given to me by a friend and finally get rid of that junky cassette player by taking the stock radio out. Today we began to hardwire everything together but ran into a problem. We found all the essential power wires, however when we got to the speakers, they did not seem to want to work. We grabbed a seperate speaker we had lying around to test the radio, and the single speaker worked. We even grabbed the speaker from the side panel of the passenger car to test and make sure the speakers didnt blow, and again, the single speaker worked, so we knew the speakers weren't blown. It just seems that the stock wiring for the speakers coming out of the dash doesn't seem to work. We tried, what seemed like, every combination possible. The only solution we could come up with was to just rewire all the speakers, which is something I don't want to do.

If anyone could off some help, I'd greatly appreciate it. Also if anyone has the color chart available for a '94 Explorer, I'd also appreciate that.

Thanks.

I did this right after I bought my X. What a pain in the azz. I don't know if there is an easier way but here is what I did. The stock stereo has basically no power output. The wires coming from the stock head go clear back to the passenger side of the truck right behind the wheel well. From there they hooked into a amp. I think one of those wires in the dash that hooks to the stock head is a power wire so when the stock unit was on it sent a signal to turn the amp on. I couldn't figure out what wire was the one I needed or how to trigger the amp to turn on. I finally took the panel off the inside of the truck. (The one behind the back seats) It really comes off pretty easily. From there I just spliced the wires going into the amp to the ones coming out of the amp. I pulled the amp and eBayed it. Once those wires are spliced together everything was fine. I'm not sure it that is the best way to do it but it worked. The whole thing took about two hours to install but most of that time was doing the things you have already tried. Unless you can figure out how to trigger the amp to turn on I think my way is at least easier than running new wires to each speaker.

wow sounds hard, Wiring my x with new sound maker was hard but it didnt have an amp, I just needed a friend to decifer the wiring codes for me( Took the wires and made a wiring chart out of the old connectors) Dam was he useful, We need to sticky a thread with every year explorers wiring diagrams for all models

Thanks for the help. I'm working on it right now and will go check it out and get back to you guys. Thanks again!

Well, we had tried to do that with the amp, however, I read the post wrong and we took the back driver's side panel off and did see what seemed to be an amp and took all the wires out. However, we could not figure out which wires needed to be spliced with which other wires, so we went back to our original plan, which was to rewire all the speakers directly to the radio. Although we did this that way, I am still curious as to what I found. Was that the amp or some other electrical wiring box?

on the drivers side rear??? Do you have 4x4 cuz i think that was some kind of relay for your 4x4. not cool, Did you rip it apart or just pull the connector off, give up, and put it back...

Hope for the best

Nah I didn't rip it apart, I'm not that dumb. I saved everything and will put it back. So far I've been driving it with no problems, but will put it back in 2 days when I finish rewiring my new speakers and put all my panels back together. Thanks for the help though.

Ya when i changed out my HU i cut the connectors because the person who installed the sterio did a crappy splicing job, They never hooked up the rear speakers and now i know why...Their dead. Luckily im a pack rat so i kept the connectors and my friend made me a wire diagram. Is your X 4x4?
