94 explorer tranny

hello I bought a 94 explorer Eddie edition well long story short I can’t start out in drive or over drive but if I start in second and get going about 5mph and then put it into over drive it will shift all the way up and down til I stop then repeat but it will cruise 75-80 mph what could be the problem I’m stumped...

How's the trans fluid level and color?

Have not checked it just got the truck thinking filter and fluid change

How many miles does it have? Some people never replace the fluid & filter, and the transmission develops issues over time. Check to see if the fluid has a very sharp smell like it was burned.

I would also check to make sure the vacuum line is ok leading to the transmission. Lots of times they crack or wear thru with time and you will get shifting problems coming out of first. There are two "soft hose" parts to it that can wear or come loose -- one easy to see at the rear of the engine bay, and the other is underneath, on the passenger side of the transmission, leading to the vacuum modulator.
