94 Explorer Transmission problem?

I'm thinking about buying this 94. I haven't driven it yet.

The owner is telling me that when the automatic transmission is trying to shift from first to second, that it hesitates on shifting unless you back off the pedal, which allows it to then up shift.

I've done some reading and have seen where this could be a vacuum problem and NOT necessarily a tranny problem? Any info you could offer up will help me in my decision.

BTW...If it is a vacuum problem, I'll be getting a STEAL of a deal.

If it only hesitates 1-2 when its cold, then it could be the governor....

If it does it all the time hot or cold, it could be a broken/mis-adjusted intermediate band, a bad vacuum modulator, or the governor as well.

What color is the fluid?

Thanks. He says it does it all the time, hot or cold.

What is an intermediate band? Is this a big deal to fix (sorry don't know what it is.)

If it's a bad vacuum modulator, are there any other tell-tale signs I should look for when I go to drive it?

If it's the governor, any other tell tale signs?

I'll try to take a pic of the fluid when I drive it tonight.

1) Intermediate band is a major part of the tranny, if its broken, the tranny has to come out. If its having trouble getting into 2nd, this band could be the culprit as it is a large part of applying 2nd and 3rd also I believe.

2)A bad vacuum modulator can cause funky shifting , and disappearing tranny fluid without a leak.

3) If the governor is bad, 1-2 will either not shift by itself, or it'll make you rev it way up, and then it'll go....governor issues usually go away after it warms

Edit: Heres an old post on what is involved in the 1-2 shift.

...To start out, remember that the 1-2 shift in the A4LD is an old fashioned one - no computer inputs used. What is used are the TV (modulator), the governor, and the 1-2 shift valve (bore 204) and the 2-3 backout valve (bore 211). Of course the intermediate band and servo are used in this shift as well, but they are so low on my list of probables as to be of little obvious concern.

If I were to look up the governer on Rock Auto, what is the exact name I'd be looking for. Would this be an easy, intermediate, or hard thing to replace for a newbie?

To get the governor out on a 2wd truck, first you need to remove the driveshaft, then unbolt the tailshaft housing on the back on the tranny....once thats out, you can get in there and replace it. Doing it on a 4wd truck is much harder because you have to drop the transfer case.

Just go drive the truck after its been warmed up...if it still wont do 1-2 without a throttle lift...its probably a band issue.

Masterd...thanks for all of your help. When you say 'throttle lift' are you talking about backing off of the pedal to get it to go into 2nd? If not, can you please explain?

Yeah thats what I mean.
