97 Ford explorer xlt 5.0
Hello everyone. This is slightly off topic and maybe dumb question to be honest. Lol

So I have 94 Ford Ranger with 3.0. It has a running issue, where your driving and get to about 3,000 RPM's. Then it starts bucking like a bronco (the horse) on steroids. Runs fine at idle or below about 2,700 rpm's.

So its stock besides:
Custom cold air intake system
Custom Exhaust after manifolds, no cat and flow master
High performance ignition control module
Msd coil
Upgraded plugs and wires
Innovation high performance chip
Stock distributor

So is it because I have stock distributor with that other stuff? Every once in awhile, it will run great. But less then half the time. I have replaced fuel filter on frame with k&n. I thought maybe clogged somewhere in fuel system. Any help is highly appreciated. Thanks

Yup, off topic and such a basic question on a modified Explorer Forum.

But wait, can you diagnose, can you read codes? That is the first step! but why rely on a good system, already installed in your rig, to throw a code to help you diagnose this?

On top of that great Ford system, which will throw codes to help you diagnose what is wrong, you got this "High performance ignition control module and innovation high performance chip? Sounds like carp to screw-up things when Ford stuff works great!

I wonder if there's a 3k rpm Rev limiter in park or neutral like the newer 3.0? If so and the ecm thought it was in neutral it would top out at 3k rpm.

First, it's honestly not far off topic.

Second, it's 94. So OBD1 computer system. Code reader's are 96 and newer, OBD2. I don't know how to translate flashes to a diagnosis on OBD1 system.

Third, the 3.0 is a gutless turd! Lol, needs ALL the power u can give it. In my opinion. So yes, upgrade and modify. This is 95 to 01 modified explorers. Which members on here may know about my issue. I'm not a car or truck builder by trade, so I don't know everything. Also these forums are for truck owners to help each other with these problems by sharing information.

Anyways, I do know when upgrading stuff. The parts need to work as a team and need to be roughly same performance range to work properly together. That's why I thought it may be the distributor being stock. Also I believe the exhaust should be slightly bigger to flow better with the C.A.I. system. But shouldn't affect it that much, like current problem.

And mostly, thanks everyone for there replies.

Oh ya. It's manual 5 speed. So now rev limiter like that. Think it's rev limiter at about 5500 to 5700.

I think what he means by off topic is, there is a sub forum for rangers which is where it should have been posted

Does it occur when hot, warm or cold. How bout when revving in neutral or only under a load. Have you hooked a vacuum and fuel pressure gauge to it when acting up. Get any black smoke or exhaust smell when it is occurring. Any change to the sound of anything. Hooked a timing light to it? Simple tests and observations can go a ways to the right inquiring mind.

Moved to Ranger section.

QUITE possibly a dirty MAF sensor....and the fact that you have this setup >>> Custom cold air intake system ....makes the MAF prone to prematurely getting dirty etc.... do a few sprays on the DELICATE MAF element with MAF or electronic cleaner spray and test.
