Ever since March 2000 I have had what I thought was a dried out dust shield seal on the driver's side axle shaft. Many here have complained of the squealing and irritating noise it makes. I made an appointment with my local Ford dealer for this last Monday.

I took it in and explained what I thought it might be. I know they just love that type of thing from customers. The tech took it for a spin to verify the noise. He came back before I left to go home and said he felt it was the hub bearing assembly and not the seal. He would get an estimate written to submit to my used car warranty company. Having less than 500 miles left on it I felt it was time to get this taken care of.

They got the approval for the repair and replaced it. It took a bit of time the next day to get the warranty company to pay their part of it. Had to work with the shop and warranty company at the same time to make sure the warranty folks were receiving the fax they said they weren't getting. Once they got it the bill was paid within 45 min.

here is the breakdown of the repairs:

$105 for diagnosis and labor
$253 for the hub assembly
$5 for shop supplies
$30 for tax

Warranty paid $340 of the $395 total
I paid $55, mainly my deductible

Thank God for warranties, no matter how much hassle they are. They do pay for themselves. I had the trans rebuilt Feb 2000. Total bill was $2400. I had to only pay $300. There were a few things they wouldn't pay for.
