My daughter came home and said the OD light started flashing on the 95 XLT and now it will not go into reverse. Forward gears seem to work fine.

It "goes" into reverse but it doesn't move. The O/D light blinks constantly.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Try unhooking the battery for 5 minutes to reset the computer. If the light comes back on, get it checked out. Also, when the light comes on, the trans goes into 'limp/cripple' mode which makes the trans shift harder. However, I have not heard of it not going into a gear, so you may have a bigger problem. Unhooking the battery is a simple try to see if it fixes the problem. Please post your results back.

Sounds like one of the bands is burnt out.
I'm going to move this to the tranny section to see if anyone there can help you out.

Okay... let's try and see what we can come up with here. No reverse forward is fine. right?

The flashing light is telling us we have codes stored in the computer memory. It "could" be helpful to know what those codes are.... maybe (in this case... generally it is VERY helpful)

let's do a quick overview first....

This transmission uses a Transmission range sensor to convert shift positions into electrical codes. If it got out of adjustment this could happen (maybe without a flashing light though). [Low probability.] [All probability factors are in My humble opinion}

The filter could be plugged or somehow damaged. [Low probability.]

Your Valve Body gasket could be damaged. [medium probability]

You could have a stuck or sticky spool in the valve body (bore 203, 204 or 205... we can expand later) [medium probability.]

Your pump could be "sick". [low probability.]

Your low reverse clutch could be having some issues, like a check ball etc.... [low/medium probability.]

Your low/reverse servo piston could have a failed seal. [Medium probability.]

That about exhausts my thoughts for now. Notice no HIGH probability solutions.

Not sure the codes are going to help us a lot here though. However...Let us know what your codes are so we can finish the picture...we can come up with a game plan.

Hello All. I've the same problem with my explorer, hence the reason I've just registered on this forum to try to get to the bottom of it.
Here's the whole story....it's a 98 4.0 SOHC Export RHD mdl(I'm in Scotland) with 108k miles. I hadn't had much use in recent months but took it oiut for a spin last week. When I reached 70mph after about 15 minutes driving, the whole car shook violently and I had to do an emergency stop and get off the road. All seemed fine after this episode and car was fine afterwards. I'm not sure if it's related, but next day, reverse gear would not engage. Forward gears are fine, but no reverse at all and initially the OD light was flashing but stopped again after a while.
I'm now trying to determine if its worth repairing or if I really need to considering scrapping it now.
Any further help/info would be gratefully appreciated.
