96 explorer build ideas

i just picked up a almost perfect 96 xlt for 375. threw a front pad. i am wanting a daily driver but also a rig that can go off the beaten path. i guese i want a bug out truck. so i guese for start i need reliability mods. the truck is a 4.0 auto. 4dr. all stock with 198k. runs and drives good.

i am doing that. i was thinking trying to find a auto tranny and mercedes diesel for reliability. and low cost. but havnt find any treads yet on it being done to a 4x4. plus i want manual hubs and t case
