I've got a 96 explorer and the fuel reset light intermittently comes on and goes off. Everytime it comes on it makes a dinging noise. Now periodically the interior lights are coming on and my doors keep locking automatically. Is there anything that would affect all three of these things? The explorer runs fine. The frequent dinging and door locking is getting very frustrating.

Maybe the GEM (General Electrical Module) is going bad?

Sounds like possible low voltage issues.
Cooler weather may be a factor.

Clean the battery posts well, and inspect the main cable connection to the starter.
The cable itself may be bad also. look for copper wiring turning dark brown under the insulation.

If the problem persists, you may need a new battery.

The battery terminals are clean. The battery is just a few months old. I'll climb under and check out the starter after work.

Another "just in case" post to add.

Many garage gurus like to put grease or another similar substance on the battery posts to keep them from corroding, however, this is a big no no on PCM vehicles.

may I ask why?

I always apply grease to my battery terminals and have never had a problem.

Yup, I used to also until I learned it will cause problems. :D

Did you learn this from your experience? And what kind of problems? Any explanation why?
I used to fight corroded cable terminals until, longer ago than I care to admit, started coating them with petroleum jelly.

Applying the grease after the connector is clamped and tightened is ok, but common sense should tell you that grease on a post before the connection is made, will work as an insulator.

My experience has been several "clicky but no starty" cars with nothing wrong other than greasy posts.

I assume this will turn into a "coke vs pepsi" debate. whatever.

A clean electrical connection is always best. Anything between the conductors is a problem. period.
