96 explorer, MAX AC switches to Defrost under any accelleration

96 explorer, MAX AC switches to Defrost under any accelleration...???

If I leave the AC on NORM, then it blows out the dash as it should...switch it to MAX, then under any accelleration, it blows out like the defrost setting is selected...????

how is the direction control, controlled, ie, is it still controlled via vaccum to the back of the selector?

you might have a vacuum leak somewhere or your selector might be going out on you (which is very bad, expensive to replace)

That sounds like the vacuum reservoir ball is not working. It is a big black ball with two vacuum pipes going to it. It is mounted on the wing liner behind the headlight on the passenger side underneath the air filter bit of the inner wing. To get to it drop the wing liner at the front and you will see it from underneath.
