I walked out of the hardware store yesterday and saw a black 3/8" or so hose hanging down from my engine compartment. At first glance I thought it was a vacuum line with a bolt stuck in the end. Upon closer inspection, I traced it back to the front of the transfer case and the "bolt" was not a bolt, but a white nylon piece that seemed spring loaded at the end. I can't for the life of me find where the other end of this little rascal should go and how it might be affixed to its destination. Any help would be appreciated. I am getting ready to drive across the country in a couple of weeks. I took a picture of this item if there is a means of posting a photo. Thanks again.

transfer cases have a breather hose on top of them, it is simply a crank case breather line. The white piece you saw is just to stop debris/water from entering the line

it is normal for this hose to go nowhere, it is just a vent.

You will find similar breathers on your front and rear differentials as well
the engine uses the intake hose as the crankcase vent
the auto transmission also has a breather tube, but it is usually metal and shaped in such a way that if the trans overheats of foams up the fluid will "puke" onto the ground

If the other end is attached to your t case, then you are good to go!

Thanks very much. I was convinced it had become detached from a vacuum port. Apparenty just attached to the frame and fell off. Will get out a cable tie and hook it up for another 97,000 miles.

Not sure if it has 2 ends but it runs up the spine of the trans and comes back down.
