96 v6 & 99 v6 Transmission swap

I posted last night about if a transmission from a 99 V8 explorer would fit my 96 explorer V6. Now I would like to know if there is a difference from a 96 Explorer V6 auto transmission and an automatic transmission from a 99 Explorer V6. I am looking for it to be a direct replacement.

yes there is.. the 96 is a 4 speed 4r55e and the 99 is a 5 speed 5r55e.

So being that it is a 5 speed will it not work? I know severeal different transmissions will fit into my older truck whether they are 3 speeds or 4 speeds.

I was told the 5 speed autos are better transmissions too. Can someone confirm that as weel as if it would fit behind a 4.0 IN A 96 sport

Your PCM won't use the 5th. Your truck's pcm was only designed to run the 4 speed automatic so it may shift odd and you'll probably throw some tranny related codes.
