Hi, i'm kind of new here. Having a bit of a problem keeping my truck running without dying. So I rebuilt a 1997 Ranger 4.0 OHV and replaced everything but the piston, rings, crankshaft and journal bearings etc etc. When I replaced the camshaft strut tower I used the alignment tool and what not so I know it was installed correctly. My problem is i'm still having to use the 94 PCM and noticed on the 94 4.0 that came out of the truck that it has a different camshaft synchro on it and its at 12:00 looking at the truck, the 97 is pointing at about 11:00. the wires were also flipped but had the same color wires. My question is, since im still using the 94 PCM does the camshaft sync have to be pointing at the same direction as the 94 sync. Do I need to modify any wires going to the PCM or should I just tream the block as a 94. My truck will not stay at idle, it just dies. I can give it gas but it has loss of power and backfires.

Thank you or any help or instruction, it is much obliged as ive been without a ride for a couple months and im starting to go a little stir crazy.

Thanks again, Much love,
Matthew

Camshaft mark and crankshaft mark need to point at each other...

Are you using the synchronizer from the 1994 or the 97? Should be using the 94

I'm using the 97 as I have read that the 94 will not fit into the 97 block unless I am mistaken. I have the one from the 94 but the 97 appears longer. If I use the 94 will it still turn my oil pump?

I sent a PM, hopefully we can help him!

The 97 3 wire cam synchro will work just fine with the 94 PCM FYI

I do not think the cam sensor is the issue here, seems more like a fuel issue (the truck starts, then chugs, backfire, then dies)

You are probably right, I will try to get the new fuel pump I have in it today so I can eliminate that.

no!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! dont do that
Test fuel pressure first

You can buy a fuel pressure tester or you can rent one from parts store
Should be 36 PSI at the rail
+ or -

Also I want to look at the wiring you did to make sure we moved them into the correct locations
I have the 94 wiring book I do not have the 97 but I can get it..........

Ok I can do that. As soon as the parts store opens I'll see if I can get a fuel pressure tester.

I haven't really modified any wiring the wires were the same colors to the syncro but in reverse order so I just wired the 97 connector to those wires and plugged it in.

The fuel pressure tester is a great tool to have for these trucks. I bought mine on recommendation here and it saved me lots of headaches and money lol

He was 180 out on the cam synchro.... will see how this turns out :)

Anyone have 97 explorer/ranger wiring book? we need to see the cam sensor pigtail (3 wire)

I went to a junk yard and looked at the same engine. I have it wired to that spec with no dice I'm gonna try reversing the wires so it's like it was on the 94. Brb
