I have a 97 Explorer 5.0 V8, I am getting multiple DTC's 118, 340, and 443.
I clear them and they come back almost immediately, truck runs good with the exception of occasionally when I shut it off and try to restart it cranks for a long time before it starts back up, doesn't do that all the time, just occassionally.

Thanks

Replace the camshaft position sensor ( complete drive unit) and go from there.

I think you'll see the problem once you remove the cap of the CMP.

Wow, yes I see the problem!!
My question is changing the drive gears is usually aided by the special alignment tool, I don't think that is gonna work here?

Is there a procedure to replace the complete unit?

Thanks

As long as you understand that the #1 piston comes to TDC 2 times during one engine Cycle-and you need to set #1 tp TDC on the compression stroke, you should be able to complete the repair.

You may find other issues while there. The ECT ( engine coolant temperature) sensor should be replaced also. I believe it is the one with 2 wires.

There is a sending unit for the temp gauge also, just an FYI so you do not replace the wrong one of the 2.

I'd probably replace the thermostat also, just because you are working on the front of the engine. This is a good time to look things over well.

Any advice on how too make sure that #1 is TDC on the compression stroke?
and once it is, is it just a matter of removing the hold down bolt, pulling it out
and dropping the new one back in? Will it only align up one way?

Thanks Again.

OK, I figured out the #1 TDC issue, I removed the hold down bolt but the syncronizer wont pull up out of the block, it turns freely but I can't get it to come out, am I missing something? I tried a small amount of pressure with a pry bar but still no success.

Thanks

Update!!

Ok, got that sucker out and new one installed, got rid of the 340 code, found a bad connector on the temp sensor and repaired that, got rin of the 118 code.

Still have the 443 code, any suggestions?
