97 mountaineer
have a 97 wannabe explorer,, 97 mountaineer,, been looking for help and can not find any. Anyways, had a leaking pan gasket on the tranny, dropped the pan to replace the gasket,, found the packing plug floating in there, which was a surprise,, but later found out was normal. While pan was off pulled filter and replaced it. Once the gasket was in place and pan was mounted back also and filled with fluid, I started running into problems. there is now no reverse , when its in the neutral position, it is in drive. what could have happened from just draining the pan and replacing the filter to cause this problem. any help at all would appreciated.... had it pulled to a shop,, and as you can quess,, all they want to do is rebuild it,, about $1400 to get it done from where i am at... but dont think that is the way out... was working fine before i replaced the filter and gasket.

Did you put the O rings on he filter ?

yes i did,, pulled the old out,, put the new one in

If reverse is neutral and neutral is drive, it strongly suggests your linkage or position sensor is to blame.
