97 v6 SOHC compatible engine and transmission

Hi, I've got 307,000 on my 97 XLT, 2WD V6 SOHC. It's gonna go any time now in spite of the constant love I've given it. I want to replace it with the same or as close to the same as I can get. I had a V8 AWD 97 and hated it. I like the low hassle 2WD and have never had an issue getting stuck, even when using it in Alaska for 8 years. Can someone help guide me to a model year around that time that is pretty similar? I'd like to keep mine around for parts if at all possible. In my area there are tons of these in the 4wd model but I haven't seen any 2wd. Am open to suggestions. Thanks!

Lots of 2WD Explorers here in the Southeast. I have one about to turn 300K miles. Added advantage - no snow/salt body and chassis issues. Mine is totally rust free underneath. Biggest disadvantage - we are a long way from you. Good luck.
