i have a 1997 xlt 4.0 v6 sohc (automatic). i was recently parallel parking my car and in drive and reverse i would rev the car up in drive to about 1500 and then the rpms would drop down below 200 and stalls. This happened 3 or 4 times.

I was told this wasnt a pcv valve problem or MAFS.

Has anyone else had this problem? What could be causing the problem? I also know that my clutch plates have started slipping, could this be causing a problem?

bump, please help i need to figure this out soon as i am driving down to florida from philadelphia and dont want it to become a major problem.

You didn't mention whether your engine was really running rough so I suspect it isn't. This sounds like most of the same symptoms that happened to me after I turned the key on and didn't follow all the way thru with starting my 97 xlt. I heard a pop noise, turned on the engine and it really ran rough. It drop really low in RPM and stall out like you described. I found the problem was the rubber cap over a vaccum port on the intake manifold of my 5.0. I don't know if you have a similar lineup as mine. The uncovered vacuum port was on the driver side of the manifold, near the back of the manifold, partly covered by two shiny aluminum 'rails'. I think the diameter of the black rubber plug that should be there is 5/8". Again, just something to rule out. My rig was pretty undriveable tho so I suspect you have something else going on...

Sounds like the computer isn't able to correctly adjust the air fuel mixture. The fact that is happens only in reverse could be a symptom that the problem is just now surfacing and could grow worse.

I had to replace the EFI on my 95. The become clogged and spray in different patterrns http://www.accurateis.com/spray_testing_01.php (check out this link for a bit more on that). Th o2 sensors could be going and creating the same problem, or the MAF might need to be cleaned. At some point these are all service items, so you might want to start on the easiest part and work you way up.

It happens in both drive and reverse. Thanks, i will check into all of those things.
