I am building a no computer no ABS off road buggy. I have several AWD transfer cases. Can I wire it to be RWD only in auto mode and a switch to turn on 4x4?
What manual trans will bolt to this transfer case?
Or do I need to get a 4x4 transfer case?
The ones I have should be auto/4H/4L

if its a v6, the m5od should bolt to it as a manual tranny, and if you have the BW4405, you can do the brown wire mod to put it into 2wd when needed and disable "auto"... or go to the bw1354 which afaik is 2h, 4h, 4l (no auto... i think(someone confirm)) hope some of this helps! :D

1354m is the way to go if you can find one

You can also do a 1354 electric shift using a stand alone 4x4 computer from a 02+ ford, pretty simple to wire up

Basically this is what I call a “control trac” delete

The borg warmer 1354m and 1354e are 2hi, 4hi, 4low transfer cases
They will bolt up to any v6 awd transmission from 1991-2004

i thought in wormsexplorer 's thread he was able to plug the 1354e into the same plug as the 4405? maybe im wrong though

Maybe we could get @410Fortune to create a transfer case, transmission Bible as a sticky.. He says asking very nicely knowing full well how busy he is..

I searched but did not find any info that answered my question. If you can show me a link to any threads where the computer was deleted and a manual trans was added I might find the answers I need. Every thread I found talks about how to wire the computer or how to make it work with out the computer knowing aka brown wire mod.

As of now I dont know what motor, trans or transfer case I will use. I need to work out what can be done with this transfer case before I spend money on a different one.

Will the brown wire conversion work with out a computer and abs?

whoops, forgot about the computerless part... in that case the 1354m!
i assume the BWM would work without abs, but it needs the GEM afaik (thats thr wire youre splicing)

Yes I did

Yes I did do a 1354e for my 97. But I used the plug from the 4405 and wired it to the wires in the 1354. It is in my thread. Its on page two about 1/2ish way down.

This is just about all you need to know to make it stand alone. There are separate 4WD modules you can use to operate a couple of those transfer cases, without ABS or a GEM. I've read here of it being done, so keep hope and dig into the details of this more.

If you truly want no computers, I’d go with a diesel.

Thats is an option if I can find a mechanical injecton turbo diesel that I can afford and will fit in the awd frame. I am trying to line out all my options with what I have. The engine I think I will use is an early 3.8 with a carby if I can work out what trans and what transfer case. I have been looking for a 5 spedd and manual transfer case from a 97 f150 but so far no luck. I have the frame and suspension and 2 transfer cases from 98 awd but no motor or trans

The only AWD you could have that’s computerless would be a 4404. You could surely run a no-tech 302, and old mechanical AOD, and still retain fully mechanical AWD.

You will not be able to keep a selectable low range with “AWD” function without some electronics.

That said, I think trying to go no-tech vs low-tech isn’t worth the effort, and the lack of features that inherently come with some electronics.

That's a minor detail that needs to be figured out first. I also agree about going with a diesel engine. A Yanmar or kubota would fit nicely, can be bought for a reasonable price and plenty of support with transmission adapters.

Turbo diesel, don’t do a n/a diesel that would suck
You want boost and you want a fmic if you do a bt4 or smaller yanmar swap

Once you go to Diesel engines there is no going back everything else is so boring lol

Well things have progressed along and also gone backwards a bit. I am trying to find or make engine mounts and find an adapter or transfer case. I have a 3.8 out of a mustang and a toploader out of a 4x4 bronco sitting in the frame. I had read on the ranger forum that the 3.8 will fit with the stock 1984 mustang mounts but it wont for me. The holes for the mounts are too small and the mounts are only half on the mounting area on the frame. If I pull the engine forward to get the mounts on the mounting area the fan is against the radiator. The motor has to go back some more for the trans mount to line up. I am still trying to decide what transfer case to use. I have had no luck finding a 31 to 25 adapter to run the bw4405 or the bw1354. My other choice would be the NP208 if it will fit.

i think the np208 can fit? i think it went behind the v8 for some peoples swaps. or... atlas II :D 🤣

3.8l is a 5.0 missing two cylinders
You need explorer 5.0 mounts and engine plates, I bet those would work and place the new engine correctly

You can use any 31 spline, 6 bolt drivers drop t case np205 np208 1356 or 4406 are the popular choices

This is the sort of wrong information that is no help. I have 5.0 mounts. The 5.0 and 3.8 have nothing in common except the bell housing pattern. Not one measurement or part. I got the 3.8 because of the myth that is a cut down 5.0 only to find out nothing from a 5.0 will work.

Interesting! I was just going by what I have seen with 3.8 sc going into rangers I guess it was incorrect or are these two different 3.8 engines

With conversions like this it will be up to you to make some parts very likely

More info and it details where the popular misconceptions came from

My apologize for the incorrect info we learn something every day
Many years ago there was a ranger rwd prerunner built with the 3.8 supercharged. Version he pushed the engine way back into the firewall for balance, eventually he ditched the 3.8 and went 5.0, this is where I learned the 3.8 was similar to 5.0. Similar apparently but nowhere near the same block, as I would learn by reading about the 3.8 Essex in the link below
That is the only time I have ever dealt with the 3.8…
