The way to make it work when going between 2nd gen explorers and different gens of rangers is to cut off the front of your old fenders, graft on the front of the new fenders, replace the header panel, replace or cut the radiator core support to make it work, replace the hood, hinges and modify placement of the latch, then attach the other front end components.
I'm not sure if you can repeat this between a 3rd gen and a second gen explorer though, but you can do a 2nd gen to a ranger up to 05, and get a look much like the third gen Explorer. Some fiberglass companies also make conversion front ends, but those are flared out and usually are designed to resemble trophy truck stuff. Also, the quality isn't always great.
