I have a 98 Explorer and at times my clutch won't engage when I turn my a/c on. If I tap the clutch lightly with a hammer it will engage and work....sometimes for the whole duration I'm driving my car and other times it stops after a few seconds. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this problem?

I don't know if it is related to my issue or not. I have an '05 Explorer that had the A/C stop working as well. I discovered that the electrical connection to the a/c compressor clutch coil was compromised. I was able to get the clutch (and subsequently the A/C) to work when I would move it in different areas. Unfortunately it has stopped working after several months of me doing that.

Don't know if this helps or not. Do be VERY CAREFUL trying to manipulate the connection (I only had success with the technique while the engine was running).

If anyone has experience with how to replace the A/C compressor clutch coil I would gladly welcome some help. :)

Good luck.
