98 front wiper motor removal help.

Hello everyone,

I just joined the forum, and did a search, but could not find the subject??? I need to replace the wiper motor under the hood of my explorer. The explorer only has 6000 miles on it, but the wiper motor burned up from no use. I think the cowl has to be removed, but i can not seem to figure how to remove it ( i don't want to break it) All help will be appreciated.

Don't know if a '98 is the same as my '00, but I'm pretty sure it is.

There is a screw in the middle of the 2 cowl pieces, remove it.

After that, it's just prying up gently, but firmly. Here's a couple pics of where the friction fasteners are:

Oh yeah, watch it around the washer hoses, they're short, and the nozzle bases break easily (hence the JBWeld on my right one )

Remove the LH pivot arm.
- Pull up on the pivot arm.
- Pull out on the retainer tab and remove the pivot arm.

Remove the LH cowl top vent panel screw.

Disconnect the washer hose from the LH washer jet nozzle.

Remove the LH cowl top vent panel.
Release the seven spring retainers.

Unsnap the wiper motor clip from the RH mounting arm and pivot shaft.

Disconnect the RH windshield wiper mounting arm and pivot shaft (17566) from the LH windshield wiper mounting arm and pivot shaft (17567) and move both away from the windshield wiper motor.

Disconnect the electrical connector.

Remove the ground strap nut and position the strap aside.

Remove the windshield wiper motor.
Remove the stud bolts.
Remove the bolts.

Thank You for the information. Unfortunately i don't have a garage and it is very cold out. I will attempt on the next semi warm day and let you know how I did.
