Very good, enjoy it now.

STE Couplers has them for the 4404 for $144 + shipping. I made a post about it a little earlier. Also, no these are not the cheap Taiwan made VC's with the wrong fluid in them, these have OEM spec fluid.

Gavin, yes they sell both parts and the whole rebuilt units. The AWD is high if you just want to buy it finished.

Thanks for the hint on the $144 viscous coupling, that would help a bunch to make DIY much better.

well, I actually ended up only paying $195 from Six States Distributors for a NEW (not reman'ed) Viscous Coupling :)

just picked it up today, finally!

Very good, sticky that source.

new here.......hey..iwas wondering if a loud(thud sound) like a clank sound when i first putmy foot on the gas pedel could have anything to do with the awd im my 99 mountineer? it only happens in first gear only and does not seem to have anything to do with the transmition. i just replaced the ball joints 7 months ago but they could have screwed it up. any help would be great.

u-joints?

would be best to start your own thread.
but.. another possibility is the cv-joint at the t-case end of the front d-shaft. They suck.

i think what happened to yours is that the sprocket that powers your front wheels is worn out. i believe the person that sold you yours found that the chain was slipping and making a terrible clunking noise. mine clunks like hell. Does anyone know if a normal joe can change the sprockets?

i have a question about the VC. i will eventually swap to a manual t-case but right now i don't have the funds or the time to do it. i have yet to take my t-case apart, i was wondering if the VC could be welded so it won't move, so i could run it without the chain or front shaft. just temporarily. for a few months or so till i get all the parts for the swap.

Just pull the front driveshaft out. Easy job. No need to take the TC apart and remove the chain. Just be sure to have a working parking brake and set it every time you park. Your Ex will creep very slowly with the driveshaft out if parked on an incline.(although this may not happen if your VC seized)

thats what i think happend. the VC siezed. sure feels like its in 4wd. got a vibration over 50mph and when you let off its almost like putting on the brakes. it's been acting kinda funny for the last few months. just started getting bad after i put 2 new tires on it. i'll just pull the front shaft and see i guess. think it'll be ok driving 55miles each way to work? thanks for the help.

Pull that front shaft quickly, if the VC isn't destroyed it may work just as you want it to. It can go either way, either lock both shafts, or lose a connection completely. Pull it now for the best chance to work as you hope. The new tires probably increased the wear, and tire size change creates a lot of heat in the VC. It's trying to make the shafts run at the same speed.

BAD BAD BAD.

you now have 2 different tires.
assuming one set is worn, the other is new. There will be a difference in the circumference of the tires. This can cause MAJOR issues, because the VC will start locking up, due to tires rotating at different speeds.

everything I've read, said anything more than (iirc) 1/16" difference in circumference can cause issues.

i'm on my way out to pull the front shaft now. the front tires still have a lot of tread and the rear is what i replaced with the same tire (Goodyear Wrangler R/TS). i was hoping it wouldn't be enough of a difference to matter. i guess i was wrong. i guess i'll swap it for a manual t-case earlier than i thought. thanks for all the good info fellas!
