98 SOHC 'diesel engine' type sound

Anybody know what that 'diesel engine' type sound that comes from my 98 sohc while running? Or is this the 'excessive engine noise' that I've read posted around the net?

Yours could be the cam tensioner problem that has been recalled by Ford. Do a search for cam tensioner and you'll find the information needed. The cam tensioner needs to be replaced along with some thing else and according to Ford, it's all covered by Ford up to some 2000 Explorer.
