98' Sport 4wd no reverse

Ok i have read through alot of posts with this prob. Alot of responses say shift fork in Transfer case. I have asked a few mechanics that are friends of mine and they dont know why that would be the problem because the TC has nothing to do with going into reverse. Can anyone enlighten me as to why this would be the problem? All gears are fine in forward, put in reverse no movement. reverse lights come on. It went out when i was backing up in 4wd, heard a clunk and that was that. please help....thanx

i havnt tried low yet, i am afraid if i do it may not go at all, and right now atleast goes forward and its the only vehicle i have

Its a long shot, but check your transmission fluid level.
