Hello,
I own a 98 XLT SOHC with 4wd. She has 91,000 miles on her. The last 10,000 miles or so have sounded a little weird. When I accelerate from a dead stop it sounds like the 4wd is engaged (or trying to engage). The sound is very hard to describe. It basically sounds like it does when in full time 4wd. The sound always goes away after 1-2 seconds. I don't think that the slow speed has anything to do with it because it does not do it if I am going very slow (just crawling by at 2 to 3 mph). It only does it after I have been at a stop sign or light. I have also noticed that it is more prominent on on incline...almost as if it truely is kicking into 4wd. Since it has "auto" 4wd, do you think it is actually turning on the 4wd for those 1-2 seconds? If so, why would it do so and why have I not heard this until now? I do not accelerate hard...in fact, I generally drive very slow. It should be noted that I put a 3" lift and 33's on her about 30,000 miles ago.
Any help would be great!
Thanks!
