A/C compressor seized?

The A/C compressor on my 96 Explorer apparently has seized over the Winter. When I turn the dial to A/C the compressor clutch kicks on but the shaft to the compressor won't turn so the clutch smokes. Of course I shut the A/C off. The A/C has always worked perfectly until now.

Any ideas what's wrong and how to fix it?

You pretty much have it nailed, the compressor is seized. I don't think there is any "fix" for it. You're probably looking at getting a new compressor and flushing the system.
