Hello all,

I have a 1992 ford explorer xlt that has 50,000 miles...yes 50,000 for real.

Anyway I have a few issues and would like to know what is involved in fixing these issues.

Firstly the tachometer will not go below 3k RPM however the needle goes beyond 3k when it is driven, all I can find when I search is for completely stuck needles. The gas gauge also does not work, not sure if thats related but I have found tutorials for that.

secondly my cruise control is quite wonky, as it works but only for short periods of time and I have to hold the button for a bit before it sets.

Also here is a pic of the beauty

So many problems with only 50k sure its not 150K

There is a thread somewhere for the tach problem, it's an easy fix, if I recall, but you have to pull the gauge cluste.

The cruise issue is something I had and tracked to the brake pedal. There is a vacuum hose from the cruise to a dump valve on the brake pedal bracket. It sounds like it needs adjusting, very easy thing once you get your eyes on it.

Is it just a solder that has come loose in the cluster? I see people talking about that.

How do I go about adjusting the dump valve?

Thanks

The dump valve is really hard to explain, and even harder to get a picture of, but here it goes:

The dump valve is not exactly a valve like you might expect to see. The end of the hose is held and exposed above the brake pedal bracket. The brake pedal has an adjustable rubber pad that plugs up the end of the hose. The rubber pad is on an adjustable mount. It has detents and held with friction, so you can just push it up by hand with a little bit of twisting maybe.

The solder is the tach fix I am thinking of.

Awesome, that explanation should do it!

Thanks a lot

I tried the soldering fix on my tachometer, and it didn't work.

I replaced it with a 94 model version.
