I have a 2000 explorer with 5r55e tranny and it is acting up and can smell burnt fluid occasionally. I also have a 97 ranger with 3.0 v6 (5r44e tranny, so I am told). So my question is can I swap the 5r44 into the 4.0 v6 and if so what changes or adjustment would be needed? Help!

I think your ranger would be a 4r44e. I don’t think the 3.0 and 4.0 share a bellhousing pattern, but even if they did you wouldn’t want the 4r44e, it’s even wimpier than the one you burnt up.

There are several differences such as the bell housing, EPC & TCC solenoids, number of friction plates, possibly the range sensor, etc. Hard parts change almost every year so why would you want to put an older & weaker transmission into a later model vehicle?
