Hello, welcome to the site. The solenoid is in the valve body and requires the removal the pan to access it.

You sure that is the problem?

overdrive

I,m not sure it just won't go into overdrive but other gears shift fine?

I had the same problem, turned out to be a whole lot of garbage in the pan/VB. Little specks of metal, shiny bits. I showed a mechanic friend and he said not to worry too much and to intall an external filter. I removed the VB, rebuilt it using Glacier's VB thread, and that fixed it. The specks clogged up the solenoid, I replaced mine but the old one would have been fine after cleaning.

There are several electrical problems that could cause the no 3-4 shift. Your first move should be to have the codes read. There are engine sensors that if failed will cause your problem. You can also adjust the overdrive band. Check the codes and we'll go from there.

I also suggest you read Glacier's thread. It is the A4LD valve body Bible.

Not solenoid

ok i took out solenoid and had tested and cleaned and it was fine and still no overdrive what should I try next? the pan was very clean more than I thought it would be and that solenoid looked new it was a bosch is that factory? thanks - john

overdrive

it has a 86 code and a 89 code- took it to aamco and they said it has a wiring problem. do you know how I can trace them selonoid wires?

I have heard on occation that the transmission harness itself can be the issue. Did you check it? I think that the connector was the problem...

overdrive

No, I know it was unhooked when I first got under and I re hooked thinking that was the problem but it was not. I will check again.
