I received a 3-4 solenoid from transmissionpartsusa.com to put in my tranny...before I installed it, something told me to check it with an Ohmmeter. should be 26 to 40 ohms right ?

mine gave me a fluxuating reading of around 170 to 250 ohms. could this be because it's new or does it have problems ? plan to contact them tomorrow and see what they have to say.

just checked their site tonight and the number they sent me (23393A) can't be found.......anybody know of any problems before I call them tomorrow ?

....it does click when you do the 12V check...

no, the TCC ohms 29 and another A4LD valve body in an old tranny in the shop has both solenoids...they both ohm at 28.

changed the battery in the ohmmeter, tried two other meters...same results.

it's got me stumped, I'll check again tomorrow, before I call about it. was hoping someone had encountered this before. :salute:

26-40 is correct. I run 33 ohm resisters instead of the solenoids to make the computer happy.

contacted T-PartsUSA this am. while I was on hold, I hooked a 12v power supply to the shift solenoid and it clicked (wasn't doing this late yesterday), then I tried the ohmmeter again...........!?!, it now reads 29ohms.

? guess it needed a 12v jolt to decide to ohm correctly ?

never ceases to amaze me; the things that can/will go wrong to my junk !

...well, I got the solenoid problem resolved. went to install the rebuilt valve body today and found more problems; the front/overdrive band is not connected to anything...just flopping loose in the tranny.

Monday, the tranny comes out. didn't expect this problem. band may be broken or some shade-tree mechanic has totally fouled up things.

everything else worked in the tranny, just no 4th gear. got a lot of cleaning; line and cooler flushing ahead of me. wish me luck guys, 'cause I'm gonna need it.

...ain't it funny how a bargain can go sour in a heartbeat ? not giving up yet, just may become a tranny specialist in my old age...lol :p:

thanks, I know where and how, it's just the aggravation of pulling it out (again), hoped it was alright because it was running fast when the vehicle it was in rolled over...lol.

may be other damage, such as the drum. I do find it strange that no parts were in the oil pan. possibly someone before me threw away any junk that fell in the pan.

well, the drum was scorched, but the ground up springs were contained,,,not much loose debris (thank goodness). borrowed parts from some 4R55E's/5R55E's that were exchanges that nobody wanted the cores on. put ZC servo on od band and moved AB to intermediate band. put double lip seal on reverse servo and am waiting on a bell housing (pump) to tranny gasket.

unbelievable that nobody in this two horse town (saw 2 horses the other day, so I know it's not a one horse town) has a gasket. maybe the parts truck will bring one tomorrow.

I'm retired and might not work tomorrow or Friday,,,,,,just whenever the mood strikes me...lol. unlike some other threads, I'll post the final results of my A4LD misadventure. I'm half way through the pages in this category,,,a lot of posters never come back and tell what happened.......never liked a story with no conclusion ! :p:

two transmission shops, at least 2 shops that call themselves that, in this burg and nobody claims to have or ever used a pump/bellhousing alignment tool. geeez !

wish this had been on fleabay sooner, could use it Monday. then I wouldn't have to drive 30 miles to borrow one from a real transmission shop.

as the French say "c'est la vie",,,,,,,,,,,,,wait ! didn't they build this A4LD fiasco of a tranny in the first place..................crap it all !

got everything back together today. holiday kept me from getting some things from the usps on Monday. the only other thing that I found wrong in the tranny was no spring in the governor. luckily, I had another donor tranny to rob a spring from. one of the governors had a steel weight; the other an aluminum weight.....what would be the advantage of either one ?

all I'm waiting for now is the twin post lift to be unoccupied in my nephews shop. then I can put this thing back in and see if it all works...lol.

.....jjf

The steel weight might be the heavier 35MM weight. Are they the same diameter, and thickness? Sonnax recommends a heavier weight to ensure that it throws back, and forth when it's suppose to. I think the stock weight might be the lighter one, but I can't say for sure. Here's a link: http://www.transmissionpartsusa.com/A4LD_35mm_governor_weight_p/400-005661535.htm

yes, they were the same size, just differend materials. I was in a hurry to button it up before my nephew's shop closed, so I put the aluminum one back in.....might just take the extension housing back off in the a.m. and put the steel weight in it's place.

in Glacier's rebuild, he put an extra spring in the governor. any idea what tension the spring was or where I can get one ?

lift won't be empty before wed. or thur. anyway...lol

well, been waiting for the lift to be empty so I can put my tranny back in. finally got to use the lift about 11 am today, got it put back in and bolted up everything except the exhaust before lunch closing. after lunch, finished and took the test drive.

good news ! I have 1,2,3,OD and the converter locks and unlocks. only problem I can see is the tranny does not always downshift to low when I stop. this only occurs when I'm in OD. when I'm in D, it downshifts to low.

I put the trans shift repair kit in it along with a Sonnax boost valve. put in an OD planet and drum with clutches and an OD band. put the double lip seal on the low/rev servo. gonna drive it tonight and see if things loosen up.

I did leave the aluminum weight on the governor (was too tired to change it to the steel one). this might be my problem, but not for a few days...lol. I'm so happy to have OD again and most everything is a-ok.

told y'all I'd post the ending to my misadventure, regardless of the outcome. I'm proud of myself 'cause this is my first tranny repair other than front & rear seals and filter & pan gaskets.

thanks to this forum, Glaciers A4LD sticky, Brooklyn's suggestions and support, and all the rest who have posted about these trannies. :salute:

Thanks for the update! Try to adjust the kick down cable. The viton D ring seal kit makes a tighter fit than the double lip seal.

And we thank you for thanking him for the update!!!:p:
