A4LD first gear

92 Explorer, 4x4. The tranny seems to start in second. If I manually force it to first it works fine so I know the gear is still there. also the truck seems weak on torque and HP. Ford basically quoted be a full rebuild for close to 3 grand.

first, does anyone have any thoughts as to what could cause this. it seems to me that it is logically some sort of shift regulator and should be a small fix.

also, any recommendations on tranny shops in the charlotte, Lake Norman NC area? It is hard to find a trustworthy shop.

Check the modulator, kickdown cable, intermediate band, and governor. WWW.ATRA.Com has a list of shops in your area. When was the last time you replaced the filter, and fluid? How many miles do you have?
