Hi all I would like to thank all of you for your help i was able to get my ex running and A special thanks to brooklynbay as he gave me a lot of information about my a4ld. So i finally got my pan back on, I had to get thinner o rings for my new valve body got all the bolts tightened down, but now my problem is I only have Drive no Overdrive no reverse Neutral works fine and i think 1,2 work but i didnt try I was able to move my truck but i had to park it because i was low on gas, The symptoms are that i shift into OD and the rps go up instead of down and nothing happens when i put it into reverse. Also I think my modulator is bad because my atf is disappearing and my exhaust is unusually smoky. Could low fluid cause reverse and overdrive not to work? What could be the cause? Any help would be appreciated.

I am by no means a tranny expert, but I would get a new modulator to start with. The trans shifts by fluid pressure compressing the internal clutch packs and operating the bands to engage the gears, so yes being low on fluid can make the trans not hold gears or not shift at all.

Replace your modulator and make sure the vaccum line is secure, start with fresh fluid and filter then troubleshoot from there. Your 3rd to overdrive shift and torque convertor lock up are controlled by the computer so you might have problems with the solenoids in the trans if these two features are not working.

Other than that I can't say much more. I have yet to tear into a trans. I replaced one in my 94 with a good spare, so hopefully in the spring I am going to tear the bad one apart and find out some more of how these work. It has no forward gears at all, just reverse.

Good luck, hopefully someone more knowledgeable will chime in with more info.

Yes. Low fluid will cause your problem. Also, just note, it sometimes takes a while to get your transmission all the way full. The full capacity of it, the torque converter and the cooler is actually something like 12 quarts, and you shouldn't be surprised by having to add at least 8 quarts after doing just a filter change. You have to run it a bit through the gears to get fluid circulated everywhere, and then it will be low again, even though it looked full at first. When I changed transmissions in my dads, I had to cycle it through the gears about 5 times (putting it in gear and rolling a little ways with it after the first few times) to get it to a level where I didn't have to add any more fluid to keep it at the full mark.

As far as your modulator goes.... get under there and pull the vacuum line off, if there is tranny fluid in that line, replace the modulator.

Thanks for the info! When i replaced my valve body i think it was the 3-4 solenoid It was the kind with a longer end and i know that because it was stuck in the valve body so i put mine in the stubby kind, so im not sure if thats relevant,. But anyways I surely will go get another jug of atf. I should buy the refinery for as much as i go through. I have dropped the pan 3 times in 3 months. Im just trying to get this truck functional, and ready for my 16th birthday when i get my license.
