I've searched the forum, can't find anything close to my problem.

I bought a used rebuilt tranny for my 94 Xplorer

The man said he rebuilt it, but pinched a seal or something like that.

So I took it to a mechanic my father recommended.

He said it just needed a "Hard Rebuild" (Bearings, Bushings, Clutch Plates, etc:)

I get it back, stick it in, and, Starting with nary a quart of fluid in it. put 4 quarts of fluid in, start it up, run through the gears R, D, 3, 2, 1, 2, 3, D,R.

I felt it go into all the gears, so with engine still idling, started adding one quart at a time, going thru the gears after each quart.

After the second quart, I couldn't feel it going into Reverse anymore, but It would still get Foward gears.

So I continued until the tranny read full on the Dip.

Still no reverse, but when I applied some throttle, while in reverse, it acted like it wanted to go, and after several 4500 rpm revs, it started to back up, but like it was doin so in a pile of mollasses. Foward gears no problem.

Reverse nada.

Any tips, Ideas, suggestions, theorys, or fixes greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

bump for you

Since my rebuild did the exact same thing, I'll tell you what I did. KNOWING FULL WELL I MIGHT HAVE TO REBUILD IT AGAIN!!!! I rebuilt it myself, didn't pay anyone to do it. So take this with no implied or expressed warranty. I was frustrated that it drove sort of OK but seemed to put the brakes on if I let off the gas after it would shift, and doing the exact same thing in reverse. OK. Here is what I did. Right or wrong, you are on your own, *I* accept NO responsibility. Your results may vary, some settling occurs during shipment

I took it to the highway, and floored it. When it hit about 55 MPH, it sounded like high pressure air escaping. I let off the gas thinking I'd destroyed but didn't see parts or fluid on the ground behind me, so, I floored it again and the air sound stopped. And, so did the resistance. Reverse worked, it rolled forward and reverse in neutral. And it shifts fine now. We've got over 1000 miles under it now. And it seems just fine.

I can't stress enough, I knew I might kill the trans and went ahead and floored it. Again, I do not accept any responsibility if you damage it trying this too. Just like I don't blame anyone on the internet when I try something they tell me. You do this at your own risk... Need any more caveats or disclaimers?

Fluid

correct you are, I did add 10, but, opps I forgot this part, then fluid started blowing out of the breather tube. I thought I had over filled it, but it was near dry when I put it in, I checked the T/C to be sure. and out of a case of fluid, I now only have two left.

As far as going on the freeway, and flooring it, I did that too, all I did was take off like a bat outta h e l l.

My foward moving gears are working just fine, and there are no air sounds that i can hear.

Just don't move in Reverse

Thanks

Problem found

I took it back to the mech and after he opened it up, he said the reverse band slipped out, so he fixed it. N/C

Going to pick it up today.

Thanks ;)
