so my 03 explorer 4.0 decided to start making noise on my a few weeks ago and last week i started to notice the abs light would come on and off at times. sometimes would come on when i drive over 15 mph and stay on untill i turn the truck off, then be off for a day or so. lately now when i start my truck it would be on and after i drive out of my driveway it would be off, then by the time i get about 300 ft down the road it comes back on. i checked the forums and noticed an issue that goes along with cruise control and mine still works perfectly every time i use it. another issue is when i turn right the front left tire makes a grinding type noise. and only left, no sound when going straight or turning left, just right. i have a feeling the wheel bearing might be causeing both issues but would like a second opinion before i dig into this. and yesterday i got new tires put on, stock size on stock rims. the noise seem to diminish a little when turning but is definatly still there.

on a side note, if i had to do wheel bearings do i have to buy a whole new hub or can just the bearing and race be replaced in the hub? without a huge mess of headaches to come with it?

You have to buy the whole hub, usually comes with the abs sensor as well. Also best to do both sides, typically when one goes, the other is not to far behind it....

usually the ABS sensor is FINE its the wobble from the bad bearing... When the driver's siode went on the Monty crazy erratic ABS lights... When the Pass side... it just came on and stayed on...

Usually, since the ABS sensor is magnetic, its the build up of metal shavings from the bad bearings throwing the light... just like on my Subaru WRX Wagon... \

AutoZone $132ish for the hub with ABS sensor... no core.. 45 minutes in the driveway per side, no air tools... Do NOT let the panic threads fool/scare ya on the fronts... its cheesy-easy...

If you ahven't done brakes in a while or ever, do the pads, rotors etc while they are all off... Also, take a look at ball joints & tie rod ends... its all easy to do on a decent saturday... drive's like a brand new rig after that.

Says the guy who lives where they don't use salt on the roads!

Glad yours was easy. Those of us that live in salt states may have a bit harder of a time.

well actually the Monty lived half its life in St. Louis (where we bought the Truck), so I know all too well about corrosion. It also saw a stint for 6 months down along the Gulf and all the sea water was almost worse than road salt.

PB Blaster and a lil heat.... Most of the write ups make it sound like a bear to even get to the bolts... its very straight forward. A lil prep and planning if you are in the snow/rust belts with PB Blaster and having at least a full MAAP torch handy goes a long way.
