You can start with both front wheel bearing assemblies, then go to the rear speed sensor, follow that up with the ABS pump and control module and just for kicks rewire everything, OR you can take it to a shop and have the codes pulled to know exactly where the fault is occuring and fix the actual problem. :D

my abs light has been on for about 5-6 months now.i have a xcal-2 programmer but i don't get any codes from the abs light being on.it don't blink,it just stays on.

Searching through threads, it looks like the most common place that fail first are the sensors in the rear wheels. Start there. Sensors are pretty cheap ($10-$15) from what I understand.

That tool cannot read ABS codes. You need specific software for that. You may be able to get your hands on an ABS code reader...or someone who's scan tool can read all vehicle codes.

oh ok,i thought that was why it wouldn't pull the abs code.thanks.i'll get it scanned at autozone or something.

my ABS light was on for about a year. my problem was that one of the wires going to the speed sensor in one of my hub assemblies had broke bc one of my sway bar links broke and the wire some how got tangled and snapped. when i replaced my hub assemblies they came with new sensors. or you could just go to your local junk yard and pull one. one hex screw is what holds the sensor in the assem. and there are a few clips that hold the wire going to the plug behind the bumper. so yeah check your speed sensors and wires. hope this hepls

i would get the code first, i spent $$$$ just guessing myself, First guess was the Rear ABS sensor $34, then the Left front Hub $200 and i still had the light after that. I checked with the local brake shop and they had THE tool. Hooked it up got a C1440 code, Master Cyl. Swtich - $20 later its fixed. Some have and some don't might have to do with movable pedals. Anyways get the code first it might save a lot of money when we really could use it.
Oh ya, if anyone is interested i have, and assume to be good, Rear Diff ABS sensor, Front Hub ABS sensor. . . . if anyone wants them . .

Does anyone know if theActron CP9449 Brake Scan Anti Lock Brake System ABS Diagnostic Scan Tool will read a 1995 Ford Explorer ABS codes from the conector under the steering wheel? The manual says it will only handle 1996 and up. Thanks!

im not trying to sound like an ass, but make sure you check that fuse! i remember my fuse blowing and i was baffled until i realized i never checked the fuse. also, what type of X do you have specifically? sometimes the abs sensor is on the top of the diff.

Depends on when in "95" ur explorer was built. They did a design change mid year, if it looks like a 2nd Gen. Explorer then yes I believe the "ABS CODE READER" will work..

Most 95's didn't have an ALDL connector. You had to use the OBD I connector under the hood for access to the ECM. If you have an ALDL connector, it must be a very late 95. I've never run across one that did.

P.S. My 95 was definitely the "new" body style and it was OBD I (EEC IV) and did not have an ALDL connector by the column.

Well according to his post "the connector UNDER the steering wheel" it lead me to believe it is and ODD2, Ive never seen an OBD1 conection in the passanger compartment that I can recall on a 1st gen. My "94" was OBD1 and yes that was under the hood..

Scan Connector types

I have the standard ODB1 6 sided connector under the hood by the power distribution panel. My 1995 4wd Explorer xlt also has a 2nd square diagnostic socket just under the steering wheel. I am guessing that this must be a later mdl (close to switch to Odb2 ?). I took it to Autozone and they tried reading the abs codes from the plug under the steering wheel with no luck. They said their tester only reads 1996 and after. So I have a bit of a strange situation here.

Two questions: Will this reader
Actron CP 9449 ABS BrakeScan
http://www.ebay.com/itm/180812152713
work on my 1995, the book says 1996 and up only, but I seem to have a special case here...

2nd I already purchased this scanner
Actron CP9015 OBD Ford Code Scanner
http://www.ebay.com/itm/270903303099
waiting for delivery now. Not sure if it will read the ABS codes from the diagnostic port under the hood. Book says it will read engine codes
but does not mention ABS. Any experience with this one reading ABS?

EDIT:

Autozone says NO for reading ABS coded with this scanner.

I also read about a method to jumper the diagnostic socket under the hood and read the codes as they blink out on the check engine light.
But I'm not sure if that way works for ABS codes either.

Two local brake speciality shops quoted $40 and $45 to read the code(s) associated with my always on ABS light. The Ford dlr quote was a whopping $150 just to read the ABS codes.

Trying to figure out a way to do this myself, with a low cost scanner (preferable) or jumpering.

Thanks,

Dan

You know, by God you're right! You should be able to read the ABS codes from the connector at the steering column with the correct tool. It has been so long I just couldn't remember this system. I also have an adapter that plugs in between the cable and module for a Break Out Box to pinpoint circuits.

So...anyway...I ran out to my shop and found my old OTC scan tool I haven't used in years. Sure enough, it has an ABS module for it. So your scan tool has to be set up to read ABS codes.

The Actron Brake tool MAY read the ABS codes. I would go to their website and investigate that. The engine tool from eBay you show will not read brake codes. Just engine codes...and you don't need a tool for that. You can have them flashed on your dash without a tool. The beauty of having a good scan tool on EEC IV systems is being able to run the built in KOEO and KOER tests. If that tool will do it, it's worth it.

You can also look on eBay for old OTC Monitor 4000 systems with an ABS module for your year car. They can be had very reasonable these days. Just make sure you get modules and cables that you need.

1995 ford explorer ABS code scanner / reader

Thanks so much for the info you so generously shared. I am going to search around for that OTC 4000 scanner. As for the Actron CP9449 brake scanner everything I have read so far says 1996 and up only. But since I have that diagnostic connector by the steering column I may be able to use it. Has anyone used it specifically on the 1995 ford Explorer?

If anyone has experience reading abs codes on a late mdl 1995 Explorer using the interior diagnostic port under the steering wheel please advise on which scanner you used.

Thank you!

I would bet they are saying 1996 and up only is because that is the year OBD II (with the ALDL connector next to the column) was required. I'm not going to say it would work with your 1995...but I would bet it would since you have the connector. Just an educated guess on my part though.
