AC Question

2003 Explorer Sport 2 door.

Turning Air flow selector knob to the left activates upper vents, AC and MAX AC as indicated by the switch.

Turning switch selector knob to the right for fresh air upper/lower vents, lower only and defog mix also seems to trigger the AC as I'm getting very cool air thru the selected vents.
Is this normal?? I'm new to Ford products

Yes. On Explorers, the A/C compressor may be on in any mode except floor-only and upper-only (and OFF).

Using drier air helps defog the window faster, but I'm not sure why the bi-level activates air conditioning as well.
