- 1998 XLT 4 door Explorer,
Hey guys and gals,
I've searched high and low on the forums for anyone who may have done this modification to no avail.
Last August I bought my wife a '98 Explorer that is in very great shape. At the time we both smoked and had one of those ashtrays that fits into one of the cup holders. Well driving at night was a real problem finding the ashtray or picking up a can out of the holder! it was completely dark.
So I got an idea on how to "shed a little light" on the problem. I went down to Autozone and bought on of those indicator lamps that is used along with a toggle switch to let you know that the switch is on. I chose the white, but other colors are available.
In this case I used it to light up the cup holder area and those two pockets below the A/C controls.
What I did is removed the outer console trim around the radio and controls. At the bottom of the trim I drilled a hole that the lamp could fit into, then wired it into the lamp wiring for the A/C controls. Also made shield out of black tape (temporary) so that the light wont shine in your eyes.
What we now have is a lamp that is not real bright but makes it easier to see things in the center console area. Total cost was about $5 or less and 30 min tops to do.
I just wanted to share this with everyone which I know have this problem. I'm also sorry if I repeated this from an earlier post but I could not find anything close.
I can post some pics is anyone wants to see where i put it.
