To enable an aftermarket radio to dim at night, I hooked up the radio's orange illumination wire through a SPST latching switch, powered from the 12 V outlet feed wire in the console. The switch fits perfectly in the Aux input hole in the console, which you don't need with an upgraded radio.

I have ~ 10 of these switches, PM me and I will send you one for a $2 PayPal.

Why not tie the wire into the HVAC control illumination right below the radio.

I do suppose this gives better control - like auto headlights on most cars that don't turn on tail lights, dimming only when remembered.

It’s easy to tap into this circuit and gives you better control of dimming.
