Take it to the dealer if the trouble persists. Most airbag light warnings seemed to have been the result of a bad connection under the seats.

As mentioned in my PM, I have merged your thread with this existing one on the same type of issue.

Peter

Thank you peterk9,
it was a bad connection under the driverseat!!

Came across this thread after a quick search. My wife just came home and said the airbag light is on in our 2011 Explorer XLT that we picked up yesterday from the dealership. We traded in our 2004 Expedition for this truck. So the calls will start tomorrow, not how I wanted to start my ownership of this vehicle. I know it is a used vehicle and will be covered under the certified warranty, but this sounds like it could be a headache until its completely resolved. Let the fun begin

Welcome to the Forum mg23:wavey:
Check out post 23 and 24. That may be the problem.

Hi mg23,

Have you returned to your dealership so they can look into this? Keep us posted; feel free to PM me your info if you need help from my neck of the woods. In your message, be sure to include your full name, best daytime phone number, VIN, mileage, and servicing dealership.

Crystal

Thanks peter

Crystal my wife returned the truck to the dealership this morning and was told it was something to do with the drivers seat belt and they are getting is a rental car as I type this. I will keep everyone posted as it goes along.

Thanks for the help.

We picked the truck up yesterday and were told they replaced the drivers seat belt pretensioner. The airbag light is out not

UPDATE:
made free hour appear out of thin air, went to dealer to have the code read... supposed faults with the seat restraint? "parts" on order now, not sure what but apparently something not held in stock. confirmed light on means airbag will not deploy if in an accident. swell...

sidenote: after 10 minutes of waiting to speak to someone in the write-up area beforehand, the garage door gets closed on the rear bumper of my Explorer- i'm cursed

I sure hope you have better luck than I have had. I've had this restraint replaced twice. I've had my 2011 EX Limited in over a dozen times for the airbag light in the last 13 months. They've also replaced the wiring harnesses, and twice they've found a problem with a connector. I thought it was finally fixed when low-and-behold, it's come on again. Between this and the exhaust smell I have had my vehicle in something like 20+ times, been without it for over 2 1/2 months total, and both problems still exist. A $50K vehicle should NOT have these problems this long!

Bought a 2011 Explorer 4WD XLT last month. My wife just came home and was wondering why the airbag light was on. We looked it up online and it says possibly a faulty connection under the seat from moving the seat back and forth (which makes sense. I moved her seat back last night so I could move her car...that's the first time in a while I've moved the seat since she normally drives it).

Of course after I look it up I go to check the mileage: 36103. Yep.

So, I've seen some posts on this forum about that particular problem. Is this something covered by Ford or will I get to go pay a diagnostic fee and then a parts fee and then a labor fee and probably end up owing $200+ for this fix?

It's up to each individual dealer but the better ones will overlook this fact since it's so close and you just got it.

I would think that the dealer would cover it. I would get it into the dealer asap....

The circuit that is probably compromised is the pre-tensioner in the seatbelt buckle. There is an explosive charge that tenses the buckle part of the belt in concert with deployment of the airbag. There is either an open circuit (broken wire or disconnected plug) or a short (one of the wires chafed and is being grounded to the body metal). Don't try to test the pre-tensioner with an ohmmeter; it may actually set it off.

I had the airbag light on too. It was a loose connector that did it.

Ours went off in our 2014 after about 2000 miles. It was the clock spring in the steering wheel.

Let us know how the trip to the dealer goes, nwin. If you need help from my neck of the woods, just send me a PM with your full name, best daytime phone number, VIN, mileage, and servicing dealership.

Well so much for the luck with the airbag light. It was fixed on 02/26 and this evening while driving it reappeared. Time to call the service manager again. This is unreal.

I got your PM and responded, mg23; I'll alert your customer service manager so they can help.

If you read this whole topic from the very first post, you will see that it is usually a connection under the seat, not the seat belt pretensioner.

Unreal that other owner's with the same problem have reported the fix that worked for them (connectors under the seat) but yet some owner's have not read all of these posts to see what has corrected the problem.

Would be a lot less time reading these posts than sitting at a dealership waiting for them to try and figure it out.

Ask them to check/repair the connector under the seat.

I did read the whole post. After speaking with the dealership this morning I alerted them to some of the reasons in this post. It's not my position to tell the service dept on the first attempt to fix or correct the problem how to do their job.
