My 2002 Ford Explorer would only blow air out of the defrost, floor, or both. It would not blow out of the rear-facing dash vents. I layed on the passenger floor board and looked behind the plastic cowling toward the back of the vent control switch. I noticed a vacuum cannister with metal armeture pointing towards the rear of the vehicle. The armeture had nothing attached to it. Upon further inspection I noticed a piece of exposed plastic, like something was broken off of it. It was the pivot point/hinge for the flap that redirects air flow. The arm had broken off. I was able to reach in with my hand and turn it very easily. I was able to re-direct the air to the rear-facing vents. It is summer so I will leave the air as is. I will eventually find the piece which broke off and try to re-attach it.
