Airbag light

Interstate said:
hmmm, sounds bad. Al, (when you get the time) could you check out the wireing leading up to the cap? When I replaced mine, it looked as if it had gotten hot and started to melt. I didn't look upstream since the cap shut off the light.

Like a cow peeing on a flat rock? That's a new one to me... lol

I decided to delve into this damn light anyway.

To answer your question, the wiring looks fine; I see absolutely nothing amiss here.

Yesterday when I noticed the trouble light was illuminated, I had just moved the power drivers seat and the manual passenger seat to their most forward position in order to vacuum the area. Prior to moving the seats there was no light.

Today I once again moved the seats forward to inspect the yellow caps and wiring. I saw nothing out of the ordinary. After returning the seats to their normal ( to the rear stop ) position, and cranking the truck, there was no airbag light.

There must be something amiss in the wiring but I can't locate it.

Any other thoughts?

Have you checked the wireing under the carpet? How far in have you checked the wireing? Do you still have the old "bad" cap? Maybe "disect" it to see what exactly is in it, and see if anything has gone awry.

Do you have a wireing diagram that shows where those wires lead to in the dash? Maybe a fuse or relay (or some other electrical coupling) is going bad intermittently.

Yikes Al.
Man, I am almost temted to tell you to get a new module but there is no guarntee that will solve the problem.

It lists for $108.00
,,, Just looking into my book there is two different air bag modules for 99-01 Explorers.
one WITH side bags and one WITH OUT.
I can't imagine driving it for all these years with a wrong module, and just now having issues. Sparatic at that. But it is a thought.

I wish I could help you out man.

Hey Al, mine came on today too!!! I think mine might be the clock spring cause I didn't move the seats. But I'm not gonna look into it till later this weekend cause I just spent 2 nights changing my rear diff bearings:( I'll post what I find

When my air bag light was on I had to replace my passenger seat belt and it went off.

Al doesnt have those type seat belts

Hey Guys,

I have a '96 with the same problem you have mentioned, but I can't find a yellow connector under my seat. My wife had moved the passenger seat through it's range a day or so before, so that may have triggered the problem. Does anyone know of a '96 doing the same thing and if the connector was yellow in that model? Exactly where do you look? I've been standing on my head for 2 hours.

1996 did not have the side bags.
Your air bag code is of a different source.

Mine just came on a few days ago out of the blue, but mine is giving a 42 code...any ideas??

The Light Flash code 42 means that the driver's side crash sensor mounting failure.

Possible Causes:

A driver side crash sensor mounting failure fault can be caused by:

damaged driver side crash sensor.
corrosion or damage at the sensor mounting surface

Good luck in resolving this one.

Great...sounds like alot of fun...thanks for the quick info...anybody seen the black electrical tape??

easy fix I have sen this before.
take your grille, and header panel off for easy acess.
Remove the sensor and clean the area, bolt it up good and tight.
Make sure it is flat and level.

Hey Monmix,

Thanks for the reply. Problem for me is I have never removed my grille and I don't know what a header panel is. Not to mention, I don't have a clue as to what the sensor looks like.

Other than those small details, I'm almost ready to pull out the wrenches and get to work. Do you have time to expound for me?

Thanks, Blues

haha sorry.
8mm socket, 11mm socket ( deep ), 10mm socket, four inch extension and a swivel, phillips screwdriver, a flat head screwdriver, and a cheese steak. a plastic cup to hold the fasteners.

Remove the plastic cover that is over your headlights. ( should be some phillips screw push clips and a few 10mm bolts )
Once that is off, look down and see your corner lights. Remove the 4 phillips screws from there.
Wrap the flat head screwdriver in a rag, and gently pop out the corner lights.
There will be a phillips on either end of the grille, and I think four across the top. Remove all them. Pull firmly but gently under each head light and the grille will be in your hands.
Put it some where safe.
there is two (?) 8mm on each end of the painted headlight mounting panel ( header pannel ) there is a black pleatic shield where the center of the grille was. Pull that gently but firmly. A clip removal tool will make this part MUCH easier,
There will be six 8mm bolts back there.
Get on your back and remove the two per side 8mm on the bottom where the fender liners end. Pull the liners down and out of the way. Up inside of there where the header pannel meets the fender at the bottom is an 11mm nut. Remove that.
you should now be albe to remove the header panel. Pull back gently and unplug the headlights.
Put the header panel some place safe.
at the top of each rail you will see a box about the size of a small cell phone.
It has a yellow connector. That is you air bag sensor.
I believe that is held on with 10mm bolts.
Remove that, ( but try not to unplug it ) clean the bracket, clean the mounting area, examine it all look for damage to the sensor and or the wire.
Re mount. Make sure it is flat, level and pointing forward ( there should be an arrow ) Check your air bag light. It should have gone out.
Eat your cheese steak, when done, put every thing back on, and dont forget to check your lights to make sure they went back correctly

Just thought I'd post in on this. My light started this week also. I just noticed this thread, so I now know that it is a common problem. Seems like I am the only '03 to post about it so far though. Have an appointment at the stealership on Friday, I'll keep you updated.

Are you getting the 3-7 code, or another? Let us know the code and how it's fixed.

Airbag Module circuit board

Hi Guys,

I pulled my airbag module from the passenger side kick panel after getting a 5-2 code. There is a fried "MOV" ( Metal Oxide Varistor) on the circuit board. I was going to try to replace that and see if that fixes my problem. Since I live in Mexico, getting a whole replacement module will take some time. Problem for me is, I don't know how to read the values on this MOV to find a replacement at an electronics supply house here.

Here is what is printed on the part:

09229
FOOF-AA
TDK

It is black, about as thick as and a little smaller in diameter than a US dime with 2 wires protruding from it for soldering to the board. If I can find a suitable replacement MOV, I'm going to try fixing the board.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

The airbag light has once again decided to illuminate itself and provide me with a LFC.

Its the same 3 7 code that has plagued me in the past.

I tried all of the known remedy's to no avail.

I shall keep after it ..........
