I have replaced the head unit and speakers in my 1997 Ford Explorer (The one with the terrifying 'premium' sound), and am now looking to add an aftermarket amp. Are there any suprises i should be aware of before attempting to do this, or is it the same as any other car basically?

Thanks, Chad

I already have my deck installed. I need to know about installing an amp in addition to the one pre-installed.

Sorry, thought that thread discussed replacing the factory amp.

I've done the same thing in my 97.. The orig stock amp I have bypassed, so the deck powers the door speakers, and I have a separate amp/sub in the cargo area.. I was gonna do the install myself for the amp, but I'd never done it, and just brought it to a place.. Your 2 main issues are finding a spot in the firewall to run the power cable thru, and a nice bolt under the back seat to ground it.

If it is an aftermarket deck with RCA pre-outs it's all the same as other installs. Power to the amp, turn on to the deck, ground to the chassis, and signal wires from the deck to the amp.

There is some info on my stuff HERE

My system is still running flawlessly, and I couldn't be happier with it especially for the price.
