annoying grinding buzzing noise

my friend has a 98 with a 4.0 automatic transmission and automatic four wheel drive. when driving on the highway, and slowing down to a coast, sometimes there will be a loud grinding or buzzing noise coming from somewhere near the middle of the vehicle. it only happens when you are coasting, and stops as soon as you hit the gas. does anybody know what this is?

Its the transfer case. Its a very common problem.

Ditto. The infamous transfer case shift rail bore issue... Time for some parts.
