Hey guys...long time listener, first time caller. Had my 2000 Sport for four years and 70,000 kilometers now and never had any major issues. However right now am struggling with a persistent battery light, which has been on for probably about 6 months now (lol). A few days after it came on the truck refused to start so I charged the battery and replaced my used alternator with (another) used one. Truck has started everytime since then but battery light is still on. I've been trying to do my research but with limited experience and confidence it's getting a bit frustrating so hopefully I can get some insight...
Symptoms: battery seems to be putting out normal voltages, off and at idle, and truck continues to run when i pull the neg. lead off. Truck never hesitates to turn over but every once in a while RPMs will instantly drop after start-up spike and truck will die unless I pump the gas to keep them up. While driving, and especially while at a light, volt/ammeter (unclear which it is) reads at about 1/4 instead of right in the middle. Interior lights dim, and the gauge dips whenever I engage accessories. Also notice excessive corrosion on battery posts which will build up in a matter of days.
In conclusion...I had it at a shop for an unrelated service and asked them to take a quick look at it. Half an hour of labour got me no info, batt. and alternator tested fine and system is charging. They suggested a brand new or rebuilt alternator (go figure).
From what I've read cables may be internally corroded or perhaps a poor ground connection somewhere...no idea how to narrow it down and would love some help. Vehicle still seems very reliable but I hate flashing lights all day
