91 Ranger
ive got a 91 ranger and since ive owned it the 4x4 would take a few pushes of the button to get it to come on, well now i push the button and i just hear the clicking from behind the rear jump seat.
so i went ahead and pulled th motor and took it apart and cleaned it and went to test it by hooking my battery to the orange and yellow wires, well i got nothing from it.
am i doing it wrong or is my motor burnt up?

well i decided to take the motor apart again and went out to test it and now it turns, so i put it back under the truck and got the same problem, so i ran wires from my battery and turned it about half way to the 4hi possition, got back it and the 4hi light was on,
so i push the 4lo and it goes right in.
it will go back and forth between 4hi and 4 low, so i put it back in 2hi it goes right in.
i try to push the 4hi button to see if it goes in, again nothing, so i give it power with the wires i ran from the battery, and again it works untill i put it back in 2wd

so what im thinking is that the bumper on the drive gear in the motor is worn or missing, i didnt take that part apart because i dont have the tools with me at school, and it is letting it go to far when i shift to 2wd and getting "lost".

i guess ill have to wait until i get home from school for christmas to find out

that usually what happens - the rubber bumper deteriorates so the armature cannot find home position. there is a fix thread for this - basically a bit of fuel line corrects it

yes ive read the treads thats how i knew of the stopper haha, but like i said i cant get to it with the tools i have now but i will definately be getting it apart when i get home and ill post updates

It's either that or there is a problem with the control box (the one that clicks when you push the button). I fixed my motor with a piece of vacuum line, but I have to push the 4 hi button 4-5 times to get it to engage. I read somewhere that it is a cold solder joint in the control module. I'll get around to ripping it apart eventually...

as long as it work im gonna be fine for now even if i do have to push it 5 times, as long as it it goes into 4wd

Indeed, or at least close in my case. Sometimes I would have to hit the button a couple times. I pulled my 4wd module off and heard something rattling inside. Opened it up, and saw an electronic thingy loose in the case. Then I found some broken wire fragments sticking out of the circuit board that matched the wire nubs on the thingy perfectly. So i heated up the solder, removed the wire fragments, stuck the thingy's wire nubs back in the same holes and let it cool. Didn't even need to add solder, but I did anyway.

It worked, whaddyaknow?

oops, just realized this thread's a couple years old... doh!...

It's all good buddy, nice to hear it worked out for you.
