Thanks, Dan, nothing like a pick-me-up ;)

Char, I feel the same way you do, but for different reasons.. I'm not sure if I can have kids, but I'm not willing to find out. Yes, it's selfish to say "My life is my own and I don't want to give it and all the things I enjoy up to devote my life to a child (or children)", but that's me, take it or leave it. I AM selfish, I DO love enjoying my hobbies (truck especially) and I barely make enough money to support myself so I really can't justify having kids, ever. Sure, I'm told once you have them you don't regret it, but I'd rather not find out. If I want to enjoy a child for a little while I'll volunteer to babysit my cousin's children until I remember why I don't want kids! lol Some people just are that way and I wish the soccer moms of the world would realize that and get over it :p

I just tell 'em, "We can't have kids yet... I still have mods to make on the Explorer!". :D
Seriously, we're both so busy that it's futile to toss a kid into the mix and subject any of us to schedule changes, etc... and our parents realize that we're busy and we may have kids when/if things settle down. We have a dog for now, and they all love their granddog.

Back to the real topic of the thread however... prejudice and ignorance exists, and basically, you just have to be above it and appreciate the ones that respect you. We all face prejudice in one form or another... Attempts at polite education of the ignorant are a judgement call, so just be careful out there.
Cheers. Here's to another year of 4Wheelin together.

You are not alone

I myself have been critiqued by the other women I work with because I get excited about a 302 swap for our Xploder. I celebrated the day the odometer rolled on over to 200,000 on the original motor and tranny with no major upsets. I have only found one other person like me (at work). She gets excited about doin smoke shows at the local track, which is way cool. Her and I are on our own planet when we are at work. No other female in the work environment we are in understands what a camshaft or a roller motor are. NO we are not lesbians, we are both married to men who fully support our interests in horses under hoods. My husband found me in the bathtub during lunch break reading none other than Hot Rod Magazine. (It killed me because I swore I would never let him catch me.)
Personally, I think more women should go out for jobs that are stereotypically "made for men". I was the first female in my company to ever show interest in driving a forklift (I scored better than the yard foreman on the certification test). I personally would like to see more women motorcrossers or NASCAR drivers. And please don't call it the 'Powder Puff' class. I hate that.

We can do anything boys can do.............BETTER!

I've been actively involved with cars for over 2 years now, and am constantly getting crap for it.

I don't know how many times I've heard, "Is that your boyfriend's car?", or, "So who installed this stuff for you?" Even little snippity comments like, "Don't see too many girls who can drive a stick", or "You're too pretty to be getting all greasy with cars" piss me off.

I don't understand why it's so hard for some people to wrap their minds around the concept of a female being into cars/trucks like men can be, and actually doing the work themselves.

I do everything myself...oil changes, tune-ups, preventative maintenence, mod installations, gasket replacements, etc. What I'm not sure of or can't figure out how to do by myself, I'm right alongside my fiance helping and learning with him.

It's also interesting the amount of other women who just don't get it, or think I'm being ridiculous. I tend to primarily have male friends, simply because I don't usually fit in with other girls. I couldn't care less about clothes or shopping or makeup or any of that... I too always remain with the guys when I'm at a social event and all the women flock off together to escape the "car talk".

I currently work at Jiffy Lube (unfortunately), and am the only female employed at my store. Some ladies will tell me that they think it's really cool I do this kind of stuff, others are downright rude about their distrust in a girl doing anything to their car. I've actually had someone say, "Oh lord, you're female. Could you get one of your guys to check the air in my tires for me?" Took a lot of self restraint from being ruder to her than I already was.

Anyway, Spas (I love those Mustang wheels on your truck, btw), I completely get where you're coming from. :) I too view myself as a bit of a "one of a kind", as I'm one of the few women who got into cars MYSELF....I didn't have an obsessed boyfriend who pulled me into the hobby, nor did I grow up in a family of mechanics. I discovered, persued, and learned about cars all on my own. I know what I'm talking about when I discuss them, and I honestly couldn't care less if I break a nail. ;)

And for the record, I cannot stand children and absolutely will not be having any - ever. :)

I had a fun one yesterday..I called a gentleman about his donation (a 92 buick Regal) to see if he could leave the keys in it as it wouldn't be picked up until the wee hours of the morning (pulled a 23 hour day so I'd have time to wash Blackjack and spend time with my fiance, who I hadn't seen in a week!). The guy thought I was a secretary at first until I said "thank you for cooperating-I'll be there to get it at about 2am".

His reply: "You? But...you...You drive a tow truck??"
"Yes sir..all 6 tons of it!"

:D

What I'm not sure of or can't figure out how to do by myself, I'm right alongside my fiance helping and learning with him.

Cool! I'm right alongside the mechanic, bugging the hell out of him ;) I actually just got offered a job as assistant managerof the shop while I was helping to dig out my O-rings two days ago...

I find that cotton balls in the ears work great when you can't avoid them and have to listen to senseless complaining-Just nod and smile a lot :D

Thanks!!

I care..when it breaks above where it's supposed to! (glances down at her band-aided thumbnail that broke off when trying to move her heavy sub box) lol

Cats are great :)

Well, not to pick on my own sex, but that familiar saying just poppped into mind: "if it's got >substitutes word< *boobs* or wheels, it's gonna cost ya...."

All I have to say is ....."you have to PAY to PLAY!"

lol

There is nothing I like better than hanging out with my husband while he works on the vehicles. I learn all I can, and I am not as hard core as some of you chickies I have gotten flack for not being "girlie" enough.

I don't wear much make up (unless I have a zit I am trying to cover lol), I don't paint my nails or shop for dresses. I prefer jeans, big enough to wear thermals in the winter under. When I go fourwheelin I want to be warm!!!

For years I was my husbands side-kick on the job. We did home improvements and I LOVED every minute of it. People always were like, "oh, let me get that for you" for a stupid ladder. I mean WTF, if I couldn't do the job would I be out here? That used to infuriate me, but now I've learned that people (other women in particular) just don't accept that women can be as cool and educated as men in the "manly" arena of life!

thats really cool, but it kinda sounds like you make it seem like any girl that does do those things cant be into cars as much ...
Im in pageants, i've held pageant titles complete with sash and crown, i go shopping for dresses and suits. But i can also change my own oil and get dirty doing it. There is a balance that people can have - they dont have to be hard core either way

sorry that wasn't directed at you Frisckey1, i just wanted to say not all girls are one or the other - and your sentence was perfect to say it

I am ONE of those Gurls.............

For one, I have my own 4-wheeler (YAMAHA Warrior 01) I drive a big truck, and I don't exactly act like a women at all times. Oh and all of my friends ( but a few ) are DUDES! I guess you could say this puts me in your class SPAS~~ I'm not into all that fussy makeup, hair and nail shit..... I personally could care less. I like to have a good time hangin out doing what I love. WHEELIN.... RIDIN...... and hitting the slopes on my board!
I'll be driving down the road and name off the make and models of the cars driving by.... its just something I do... I do CARS.... I've always had the intrest. It doesnt help that my BF is also a CAR/TRUCK guy ( His truck posted in my Pix ) and also the BEST handy man around. I learn my tricks from him. He's my best friend :D
I always feel like the outsider when I'm in a group of chicks......... YOU KNOW how they talk! I'd rather be laughin it up with the guys and doin my thing :smoke:

I must say I'm a little jealous of ya, Rubyn...

Jason and I broke our engagement and ended our 8 1/2 year relationship last thursday for a lot of reasons, but one of the foremost was my lack of 'girlie-girlness' and that he couldn't stand that I was having more fun with my pals in my explorer club than we've had together in years :( It's weird: you'd think as time went by we'd develop similar tastes, whereas exactly the opposite happened. Now I'm a little afraid to start a relationship with any new guys who like to talk cars -what if they get sick of hearing it from their girlfriend? That ever happen to any of you ladies? When your signifigant other says "OK! ENOUGH ABOUT THE NEWEST CAR ON THE MARKET!" ? :(

Spas,

Sorry about your break up. My boyfriend never got sick of it so we got married. Rick just loves the fact that I'm into the same things as he is. He was my first serious boyfriend and he began my learning about cars/trucks. Majority of the guys I dated were into cars so I learned more and more. I had a few of them that weren't worth squat. Don't give up on guys so easily. Unfortunately, you may have to go through many a$$holes to find the right one.

Good luck and keep your chin up.
