I need to know how far the lock nut assembly protrudes into the hub.

Rick, I just measured on my spare axle. It's 2 7/16" out, from the hub mounting surface of the rotor to the end of shaft.
 






Eh, just reread your question. ;)
It's 13/16" to the outer locknut. Is that what you want to know?
 






...i'm not sure if this will help you but this is a blowup from ford...for reference if you have a first gen in front of you, item 3b457 is the c clip on spindle and 3b458 is the splind washer...i am thinking you are looking into something else but maybe this will help...:D
