hello everyone, I have a 95 Explorer E.B. edition with a 4.0 auto tranny 4x4. It has over 200K miles and it started to get sticky valves( loss of power, back firing, missing bad, and filling my cats with gas) so i got a 96 explorer XLT 4.0 auto tranny 4x4 that i was going to fix up bc it runs great with only alittle over 100k miles but under neath and rear quarters are rusted out. I called the ford dealer for ha ha and asked if the motor where interchangeable. i know they will bolt up no problem but they said sometimes when changing years in motor swaps you will have a problem with the fuel system. does anyone know any tips to avoid this from happening? thank you for your time and God Bless

i THINK its a direct swap, but when ever someone has a motor swap post like yours, i say, take the fuel rails, all the sensors, exhaust manifolds, and upper intake manifold as well as the engine harness, from your old motor, and put it on the new one. that way you wont have any problems. like you said, the block and heads are the same thing.

I just did this exact swap a couple weeks ago. Except I put the 95 engine into a 96. The only difference is the CAM POSITION SENSOR. I don't know if the 95 computer will acknowledge the 96 sensor. I know the 96 won't use the 95 sensor. They are different. If nothing else loosen up the shaft before hand and it will making the swap easier if you leave it in the engine and have to swap it out later. If you do use the 96, pick up the special tool from the Auto Parts store, makes installing the sensor fool proof. The 95 has a whole different procedure for setting the "timing". This sensor has something to do with fuel delivery. Good luck and have fun

Thank u for the help, im in the middle of the swap now, i also just found out the mass air sensor is different on them, so i thought i would just swap out the wiring harness and computer, keep the wiring and computer with the engines they came off, and i figured it would be good practice for next summer for when i do the 5.0 swap. Thank u for your help,

cam position sensor clip/plug is different and i think it was the water temp sensor clip/plug is different and the trans harness is different but it unplugs from the main harness so it doesn't matter which ever you use. but the motor and all accessories are all inter changeable, my recommendation is to """NOT""" pull the cam position sensor all you can cut the pig tail from the other and solder it to your harness as it is a MASSIVE pain in the special tool needin rectum . you have to TDC cylinder #1 , have the tool, align the damn thing which is a guess at best and try and get the stupid effin thing in the hole without messing up the alignment while getting it past the firewall and intake manifold. it just suck so leave it alone and if you can't solder buy some quality butt connectors and some heat shrink

the 96 ecu will acknowledge the 95 sensor and vise versa. they are both 3 wire magnetic pickup i did it to mine "95 ecu 96 sensor" it works fine
