I have a 91 EB and it has a factory sunroof or moonroof. Tinted glass with a twist knob to raise and lower it. All it does is tilt... and leak. :(

It has rained very hard down here in South Louisiana with this tropical storm. Well this morning i had dripping water coming from my headliner. I tried to blow the lines out with a small air pump, a Black and Decker Air Station. Is it not big enough, or do i just give up and go and ave it fixed at a shop ??? Any info would be helpful.

Were the drain rails plugged up?

If not I'd bet you could just clean the contact areas on the glass and rubber boot and stop the leaks.

well, it drips from the seal where the glass seats on the gasket. and i think that the drains are plugged up.

Never had any problems... Though I don't have a sunroof.

I had a '92 with the factory pop-up, and the only time I ever got water in the truck through it was when I had it sitting in an airport parking lot, and the remnanats of a hurricane went thru. When I got back from my trip, I had a wet seat and headliner. I think the wind forced some water under the seal. Other than that, it worked well.

You might want to make sure you have the glass installed properly. Ford had a "recall" on it because it was easy to get in wrong. (The recall was to put a sticker on the handle warning about improper installation!!!)

No Problems Yet...

I just had mine installed aftermarket, but one thing the guy said was that after a few years, the weather strip may develop cracks and may need replaced. Or if I developed a leak...I should check the sealant and perhaps bring it in for a re-application (or recaulk). Good luck. I hope I don't have any problems.

sunroof problems

i have a 91 explorer sport EB with a factory sunroof......the only problems i had....was when i took it out because i thought id be cool and turn my sunroof into a moonroof....lol...lets just say that didnt work to well...i stripped out the screws in the front and they didnt go tight....but the sunroof stayed and ddnt move...but.when it rained....lets say i had some fun with the hair dryer...so...anyway...check those screws in the front...they have to be very tight......ALSO....check those 2 red clips are locked...in in the back...u have to HOLD THEM IN and put the sunroof down....if you tilt it the whole way up. ALSO...just a hint DONT take your sunroof out....it creates a vaccume inside when you drive....its REALLY annoying...and its also hard to re-install....

GOOD LUCK, ~Jamie~

Never had any problems with mine other then the sunroof cover not screwing in anymore... by the way, anyone know where i can get one?

I have the same thing on my '93 xlt and mine is now leaking pretty bad, it smells very bad in there. The seats and the headliner are pretty wet. I even had duck tape all around the sunroof this time but the water still found a way in, don't know what to do but it is very annoying!

See...

This is the kind of stuff I was looking to hear about BEFORE I had mine done. Oh well...I luv it and its in now...hopefully it won't leak, cuz mine is designed to tilt (2 positions) AND come out.

No problems on mine ever.(looking for some wood to knock on).

SUNROOF PROBLEM

Hi i had a leak on my 1993 when i purchased it but i just cleaned the rubber and put a thon layer of vasoline on it and it has not leaked after that. Thanks Rick.

My friend has a 1984 Peogot and all his sunroof leaked. He did the easy thing. Took some caulk and sealed that thing up real tight. His car is black and he got black caulk so it matches ok. Now it doesn't leak from his sunroof anymore.

I know this is an old thread, but I just figured I'd bring it back to life to get a quick question answered. The factory tilt sunroof in my '94 is starting to leak. It's just a small leak so far. (There's more info about it in Dead Link Removed if you're interested.) Anyway, I just found this thread, and there are about 15 different methods of trying to fix the leak listed. I was just wondering if anyone might be able to tell me which would be the most likely to fix the leak, which should be easiest, and which I should just plain try first. Thanks!

well the way my friend did it he no longer can open it. Its sealed shut.

Alright, well I still want to be able to use the sunroof. So what about the other suggestions?

Sunroof Leaks- Tears and whatnot

I have a 93 FE xlt w/ and aftermarket Popup Sunroof made by Webasto. My seal around the sunrook has a rip/tear in the back left corner, right over my head. I am trying to find a way to either seal this tear or to replace the seal completely. Unfortunately, Webasto does make this sunroof anymore and No one can tell me if there is a way to seal or replace it.
I have seen in this board ppl who can MacGyver stuff to fix almost anything with their FE. So what I was wondering was, can I use like another type of seal or maybe fill the hole/trear with a latex or foam rubber or something. I mean technically I could seal the rip with liquid latex, making like a ptch, but I don't know if that would hold. Any suggestions would be greatly appriciated. Thanks
Dan

This is an old thread, but the problem is current. My sunrooff began leaking a few weeks ago. Today I cleaned the perimeter, and I noticed it didn't really look like it was built to seal at roof level, so there had to be an internal drain.
I straightened out a coat hanger wire and began probing the corner where it was leaking. I got the wire to go several inches into the corner, then I heard a sound like a toilet flushing. I think I fixed it.

I had the same problem with the sunroof on my 93. First, we used a compressor to shoot air down through the drain rails, then it started again. We found out that it was the seal. We called Ford and they said they didn't make the seals for 93s anymore. Then at Home Depot we got some small weather stripping and put it around the edge that has worked great for the past 4-5months.

I usually take the sunroof out of my 93' once a year, pull the weatherstripping out, clean it with armor all, lay it on the ground and let the sun heat it up for awhile, while the stripping is baking, I clean the drain holes out, wipe down the seal area. when I reinstall the stripping I use a thin layer of vasoline in between the sunroof and surface of the rubber. No leaks since I started this
